BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE WORKSHOP AND STRUCTURE:
This international hands-on workshop is a satellite event of the Tallinn Architecture Biennale “How much?” and is organized in the context of developing the new general plan of Tallinn.

Lake Ülemiste is the city’s main source of drinking water and has historically been closed to the public due to water management requirements. As technology, infrastructure, and societal expectations evolve, the possibility of opening the lake as a public space emerges.

The workshop explores how Lake Ülemiste and its surrounding landscape could be opened as a meaningful public space while respecting its ecological and infrastructural role.

The work will be developed simultaneously across two scales:

  • Urban scale – mapping and proposing new connections, access points, and spatial relationships between the lake and the city
  • 1:1 scale – designing and building a prototype or intervention that materializes the spatial idea on site

Participants will engage in both analytical and hands-on processes, moving from urban scale thinking to physical construction.

FORMAT AND MENTORSHIP:
The workshop is curated and hosted by TEKTUUR, a hands-on practice working across scales, in collaboration with mentors from the New European Bauhaus Academy network.

CALL FOR APPLICANTS:
The workshop is open to BA and MA students studying architecture, interior architecture or landscape architecture in one of the NBAA member universities. Additionally, 2026 graduates are welcome to join, if their home university (an NBAA member) supports it.

PS unfortunately the current call is not open for students, who are BA 1st year students by the time of application.

SCHOLARSHIP:
All accepted students will receive a Nordplus scholarship of 270 EUR (in total for 8 days) + travel grant of 330 EUR (660 EUR for Iceland) to cover travel, accommodation, local transport and food. Participating students are responsible for arranging their own travel tickets, accommodation etc.

SELECTION:
If interest in the workshop exceeds the number of available places, participants will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • If possible, all NBAA member institutions should be represented
  • Students with fewer opportunities will be prioritized (feedback will be requested from each university’s coordinator)
  • Preference will be given to students in higher years
  • Short motivation statement written in the application form

Applicants will be notified of the results no later than June 3.
